|
Some of the major comments made by the Economic Survey of 2007-08 on the different social sectors are :
* Greater focus required on human development in the country’s development planning.
* Disparities between States in development outcomes can largely be attributed to governance and delivery of services.
* Need to improve supply of public goods and services to urban poor.
* Need for better implementation of schemes specially NREGS – lessons learnt from earlier phases of implementation need to be utilized in the third phase of implementation of the programme.
* Trade, hotel and restaurant sector contributed significantly higher in 2004-05 to the over all employment than in earlier years – transport, storage and communications apart from financial, insurance, real estate business and community, social and personal services have also increased their shares in employment.
* Increase in employment in organized sector is on account of informal employment of workers.
* With increased demand for higher quality education, training of teachers has become very important and out of box thinking is required to ensure adequate supply of quality teachers.
* Inspite of improvement in quality of healthcare, wide inter-State, male-female and rural-urban disparities in outcomes and impacts continue to persist in the health sector.
* Inadequacies in the existing heath infrastructure have led to gaps in coverage and outreach services in rural areas.
